What Is a Carnet? Understanding CPD Documentation
“Carnet” covers two different documents, and it’s worth knowing which one applies to you.
An ATA carnet is for commercial goods, professional equipment, or samples – not for a personal vehicle.
A CPD carnet (carnet de passage en douane), also called a carnet de voyage, is the one you need if you’re taking your own car overseas. It’s essentially a passport for your vehicle: an internationally recognised customs document that lets you temporarily import your car into a foreign country without paying import duties and taxes.
Think of it like your own passport: your vehicle needs its own documentation to travel. The CPD carnet guarantees to foreign customs that your vehicle will be re-exported at the end of your trip. Without it, you risk vehicle seizure or significant fines at the border.
Are you relocating and want to move your vehicle permanently? In that case we can give you advice about importing a car, whether it’s from Australia to NZ or elsewhere.

Can I take my car overseas?
Yes, provided you meet a few key requirements:
- Your vehicle is registered in New Zealand
- You hold a valid NZ driver’s licence and International Driving Permit
- The vehicle is for personal use only – not for sale or commercial purposes
- Your carnet is arranged and approved before departure
