Frequently asked questions

The New Zealand Customs Service authorises a customs broker to handle the customs clearance of cargo that arrives in the country. These professionals are highly skilled in accurately classifying your cargo, preparing and submitting import declarations to government agencies, and determining applicable tariffs or concessions.

It is important to ensure that all the information on your documentation is accurate and complete when planning to ship internationally. Any errors or omissions can lead to significant delays, additional charges, and even the possibility of your cargo being destroyed or returned. We recommend engaging with a customs broker like Jacanna to avoid such situations.

To calculate import tax in New Zealand, follow these steps:

  • Determine the Customs value of the item, which may include the cost of the item, shipping, and insurance.
  • Calculate Customs duty, typically as a percentage of the Customs value. You can use the Customs Info Database tariff to look up specific duties and tariffs.
  • Calculate Goods and Services Tax (GST) at a rate of 15% on the Customs value of the item.

Please note: If the value of your item is less than NZD$1000, you won’t need to pay any duty, fees, or GST to customs.

Freight forwarders are responsible for the transportation of goods, whereas customs brokers handle the entry of goods into a country. Customs brokers work directly with government officials and port and airport authorities to ensure that the imported goods meet all the necessary customs requirements. However, as your one-stop shop for international freight forwarding, we handle both the transport of goods and customs clearance ourselves to make it even easier for you.
