What is Project Cargo?
Sometimes, cargo is too big or awkward to fit into a standard shipping container. When that happens, we call it “project cargo”. This type of freight requires a unique approach to shipping; it can’t just be loaded into a container and shipped off like regular cargo. That’s where project freight forwarding comes in. We specialise in handling heavy, bulky, and otherwise difficult-to-move objects.
Some examples of project cargo could be:
- Agricultural equipment, including tractors, bulldozers, and excavators.
- Large vehicles like campervans, motor homes, and buses.
- Aircraft, such as small planes and helicopters.
- Watercraft, including yachts and sailing boats.
- Specialised factory equipment.
How Jacanna Tackles Project Freight
Roll-on Roll-off
f you need to transport project cargo and are looking for a cost-effective method, Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) can be a good option. With RoRo, your cargo is loaded onto the shipping vessel by driving or rolling it onto the ramp. It is then secured for transport. Once the vessel reaches the destination port, the cargo is rolled off and can be driven to its destination or loaded onto a Heavy Goods Vehicle for further transportation.
RoRo is suited to any:
- Motorised vehicles such as trucks, tractors, cranes, and motorbikes.
- Trailerable cargo, including boats, caravans, motorhomes, and heavy plant equipment.
- Large, tall, and heavy static cargo that can be loaded onto MAFI or roll trailers.
Flat Racks
Jacanna can transport project cargo that’s too tall to fit into a regular container by using flat racks. These racks don’t have any sides or lids, which makes it easier to load and unload cargo that other types of containers can’t accommodate.
Our agents take extra measures to ensure the safety of your freight during transportation, as flat racks are comparatively less secure than standard containers. Proper securing of the cargo is ensured to avoid any damage.
Flat rack transportation is suited to:
- Larger boats
- Small aircraft
- Out-of-gauge cargo
- Heavy machinery
Breakbulk
Breakbulk shipping is a method of transporting large or uniquely shaped cargo that cannot fit into a standard container. The cargo is loaded directly onto the vessel using port cranes and is securely harnessed to prevent any movement or damage during transportation. If necessary, the cargo may be disassembled into smaller pieces for easier transportation, which is where the name breakbulk comes from.
This method is often used for:
- Oversized cargo
- High and Heavy machinery
- Non-running vehicles
- Mining equipment
- Wind turbines
- Oil and gas equipment

Frequently asked questions
The first step of project cargo shipping is touching base with the Jacanna team. After that, we’ll schedule a consultation session with you to fully comprehend the extent of your project. During this session, we’ll ask you to give us details about your cargo, such as its size, weight, and any specific requirements at the origin or destination. If needed, we may also ask you to provide us with pictures or diagrams of your cargo.
Transporting project cargo is tricky, requiring far more moving parts to complete the delivery. We can’t accurately assess the entire cost until we fully understand what it is you are looking to transport.
That’s why our process begins with an in-depth consultation where we can get an idea of what it will take to deliver your freight. From there, we will provide a full quote on the expected costs.
